Allergy Testing
Everyone is affected by allergens differently and some are more severe than others. Your allergist will determine which test is right for you. Allergy testing is performed with allergen extracts or vaccines that meet U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirements to ensure the safety of their use.
Types of Allergy Tests:
Skin Test – A very small amount of allergens are put into your skin by making a small indentation on the surface of the skin. This is the most common type of allergy testing.
Challenge Tests – A very small amount of an allergen is inhaled or taken by mouth. This type of testing is supervised by an allergist and usually performed with potential food or medication allergies.
Blood Tests – Blood is drawn when skin tests are unsafe or will not work. This can happen if you have a skin condition or if you are taking certain medications.
